Tatsuya Sugiyama

Tatsuya Sugiyama is an Analyst at The Asia Group based in Tokyo, where he supports research and analysis on US-Japan relations and East Asia’s political economy, with a focus on security and technology policy.

Before joining The Asia Group, Tatsuya authored a monograph on US-Japan space cooperation at the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies in Washington, D.C. He presented his research at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in February 2025 as a guest speaker on US-Japan relations and space policy. He also worked as an intern for the First North America Division at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he analyzed the 2024 US presidential election and supported high-level diplomatic meetings with US congressional delegations. 

Tatsuya is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts with a concentration in North American Studies at the University of Tokyo. He was selected for the university’s Global Education for Innovation and Leadership Honors Program and studied Strategic Management at the London School of Economics (LSE) Summer School in 2023 as a fully-funded Tazaki Foundation Scholar. He also spent a year as an exchange student at the Johns Hopkins University, studying Political Science and Economics. In 2021, he served as a Torchbearer representing Tokorozawa City in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay.  

Tatsuya is fluent in Japanese and English.
