Published 20 May 2025

The Hinrich Foundation hosted a private conversation on 7 May, 2025 for the US Embassy in Singapore to engage with some of Singapore's major corporates, policy makers, and influential thinkers on the US effort to reimagine international trade for the future.

The US Embassy's Acting Chief of Mission Casey Mace, Counselor for Economic and Political Affairs Deji Okediji, and Economic Unit Chief Fred Brust joined a roundtable with the Hinrich Foundation for a private conversation to discuss recent changes to US trade policy and how it impacts Singapore and the region.

Attendees included senior officials and executives from the Singapore Business Federation, Singapore LNG Corp., Temasek, SSMC (the Singapore subsidiary of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., or TSMC), the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Singapore Management University, Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Malaysia High Commission in Singapore.

The conversation focused on the consequences and causes of US efforts to rebalance global trade, uncertainties surrounding the US bilateral deals under negotiations, and the wider implications on businesses and international and bilateral relationships. Participants also delved into broader themes such as the restructuring of the global trade architecture and the exploration of alternative trading arrangements.
